CHARACTERS and AUDITION MATERIAL
The play is made up of 10 principals and an ensemble of Yellowcoats. Principal roles are as follows :
JEFFREY FAIRBROTHER (M)
Entertainment Manager. Educated, well-spoken, and out of place at Maplins! Whilst charming, he's often indecisive, finding himself caught between duty, ambition and romance.
GLADYS PUGH (F) Singer
The efficient and loyal Yellowcoat who serves as Jeffrey's secretary. Warm-hearted, capable and endlessly patient, Gladys secretly harbours feelings for Jeffrey. Welsh and passionate. She has a solo song and will dance with the ensemble.
TED BOVIS (M) Singer
The camp's Chief Host. A lovable rogue and eternal schemer, Ted is always looking for a quick profit or an easy way out of work. Despite his flaws, he has a good heart and is fiercely loyal to his colleagues. He has multiple solos with some basic dance steps.
SPIKE DIXON (M/F) Singer
A young comedian desperate to make it big. Nervous, eager and often the butt of jokes, Spike possesses genuine talent and optimism, even when things go disastrously wrong. He has a solo song and dances with the ensemble.
PEGGY OLLERENSHAW (F) Singer
A chalet maid who dreams of becoming a Yellowcoat. Sweet, determined and often accident-prone, Peggy's relentless optimism makes her one of the camp's most endearing characters. She has a solo community song and dances with the ensemble.
YVONNE STUART-HARGREAVES (F)
An attractive and ambitious Yellowcoat. Sophisticated and glamorous, Yvonne is determined to improve her station in life and is not above using her charm to achieve her goals. Dances with ensemble.
BARRY STUART-HARGREAVES (M)
Yvonne's husband. Pleasant, enthusiastic and somewhat naive, Barry adores his wife and is blissfully unaware of many of the schemes and rivalries around him. Dances with ensemble.
FRED QUILLEY (M)
The camp jockey. Down on his luck after losing his racing licence. Full of stories from his racing days, he brings warmth and humour to camp life while quietly coping with the disappointments of his past. Dances with ensemble.
UNCLE BENJI (M)
The children’s entertainer. Enthusiastic but his best days are behind him. Hapless and accident prone. The actor will also play the role of Chesterman.
SYLVIA (F)
Yellowcoat. Takes part in dance routines and has additional dialogue. Sylvia also sings with the ensemble.
THE YELLOWCOATS (M/F)
They are the heart and soul of Maplins. Wearing their bright yellow blazers, they are the holiday camp entertainers responsible for ensuring guests have a memorable holiday. They also dance and sing in three big numbers
